A Villarcayo about five miles (Merindad de Castilla la Vieja), entering a curve, we came across a small group of houses called Escanduso (Burgos), which descends from gardens to the river Nela. Reduce speed and, on leaving the curve, we see a small temple, which seems so small chapel, but no, then we say that a parish. So small that on more than one occasion, we have ignored the passing before him. If we now stop to see him was due to the insistence of a friend, who knew him of old, and knew of his random destination.

Manolo, who has been a bit of everything in this life and has traveled trucker carrying salt, told us with lots of salt, something always remains of the profession, "that way with Mariano, Peer, Jesus and a few others, but no more than half a dozen, stonemasons doctorate degree in no time, back in 2004, accumulated material added good will, and repaired cracked walls, collapsed roofs, crumbling walls, whatever. .
.
Mariano, another "planter" in the neighbor instead of scanning, after showing the wonderful temple would also like to finish restoring, also declined comment on the highest levels "responsible for culture . He preferred to take home, full Memories sailors riverside and show photos of "before" the "during", and "after" the temple of Escanduso he helped save. .
.
And that ends well is this, a rural church, humble, if it seems insignificant, but deeply loved by his parishioners. Dear perhaps more by love than by devotion to the homeland, but that's not up to us to judge, which everyone has his soul in his "almario." Because for these people sacrificed so valuable is the small building as if it were a cathedral, as valuable as to face civil and ecclesiastical bureaucracy and overcome. .
And there is the restored church of San Andrés de Escanduso, leaving curve, shouting from the rooftops and the mountains, to hear him whom it may concern: "shame and humiliation!" . . Shame
for "competent" authorities, civil and religious, because they have been published as the initiative, property and the sweat of the people, who rescued the building from destruction and oblivion. Humiliation
to these authorities, because the materials have been builders "a few old people", some retirees, with more will than strength, without more resources than their determination, but able to do what, who knows, has and can be refuses to do in so many places.
Shame and humiliation, unlimited, to the authorities "responsible", with perpetual pillory and stocks, while we rejoice that, among the people, there are still ingenious "Hercules", who dare fools "Polyphemus" by the State Administration .

La Cerca, a chronicle of a walking corpse.
The abandoned City of La Cerca (Burgos), which was formerly the Palace of the Iron-Salinas, and Strong House even before the terrible strain of Salazar.
This transfer, of the powerful and rebellious feudal lords, negatively affected the magnificent Romanesque N ª S ª de la Asunción (second half of twelfth century), on which there were numerous additions and reconstructions, with the noble intention aggrandizement, but at present disfigure it, to endanger structure. If you can give away solid impression, despite the damage, just a bit closer to see that we are facing "a walking corpse."

What was lost here a primary temple, in symbolic art of the region is significant in that it is saved low. But for how long? The clock is ticking, and does so with the minutes against the integrity of this gem.

Worst of all is that "over-apse, a kind of garret or attic, useless structure that weighs like a mountain on an apse that was not built to withstand the dead weight. Is the fossil of the great temple that was intended to raise late, but its high nave was discontinued. Luckily, it would have ended up knocking the shell apse and sculptures.

And that insidious mass of stone, which goes over the medieval apse, is the sword of Damocles that one day, not far away, deprive us of this treasure of Romanesque symbolism. Its weight is opening the original walls, the steep bulge is clearly visible, both internally and externally.

The shell of the apse shows a strange Maiestas Domini with Tetramorph all badly repainted in red and black. It appears that such figures were not made for this place, exotic place. Have they been taken from another site, an eardrum, or a frieze, the original building? You may never be able to study them, two cracks, badly patched with cement, threaten throw down the set.

To Whom It May Concern: A rough and amazacotado cairn as a "buttress" in front of the apse, with the sacristy attached to the north, have so far prevented the final collapse of the temple. Although the south side, free of attached buildings, represents the weakest point by which everything can fall apart. Do something now, but ya, ya. This treasure can not disappear, as has consented to go away so many others, decided an emergency operation for today. Failure to do so, is brought to pillory and stocks, until the Supreme Judge of the Pantocrator, that who you claim to worship, I call your presence for a trial more severe than ours.

At times this blog has been criticized for repeatedly complaining about bans taking pictures, when denouncing serious problems affecting the property. Well, for those "purists" go this macabre entry. Is there enough here "blood and romance bait" to satisfy his instincts protest?

Fence in Merindad Losa (Burgos), today is a humble hamlet, 7 km from Medina de Pomar, and has 17 inhabitants (census 2007). The place survives as he can, with some tourism and the passage of hunters. However, during the Middle Ages, was a town of some importance. Here's Salazar had fortified house, where he was born Lope García de Salazar, "Iron Arm" (1264-1334). Terrible in battle, they used the singular cruelty in the gang war between "Oñacino" and "Mr. Rogers, of the Basque Country, was no less terrible in love, as he had 118 and 2 legitimate bastards. Exploits recounted by his namesake grandson, nicknamed "El Sabio" (1399-1476), in 25 volumes of the "Bienandanzas and fortunes of Mr. factional Onacinos Lope García de Salazar" . On the manor house, come down, got up in the XVII century, the Palace of the Iron-Salinas, turned into City Hall by 1955, and today total abandonment.

National Monument Particular "
"The National Monument,
of my estate, it is especially when it rains it gets wet
like everyone else.
Crouch, and turn to duck,
that to enter you'll see
charge and not a photo will do ... "
(Project run nursery rhyme).

The magnificent Romanesque church of San Pedro de Tejada, XIIth century, in Puente Arenas (Burgos), was declared a Historic Artistic Monument in February 1935 and National Monument in November year. Notwithstanding lovely building, it was a real estate and property from the confiscation, which were purchased from the State, Huidobro family in 1851. And so on ... private, surrounded by fences, walls and prohibitions.

Although benefits of protection, assistance and grants appropriate State for such buildings, all of which leaves the pocket of the taxpayer, the owners, in exercising its right not to be deprived of scrub nose the private nature of the place. First, through a large gate that prevents even the approach to the temple, after the transfer that, in the hours authorized for the visit, still have to kowtow to the obscene sign of "particular property", spend another fence, and then go through box office. So, if not in business hours, the "ability" of the owners prevents even closer to the outside of the temple.
.
And it is the biggest pain in the door once we have a paltry lineup preventing the taking of photographs. What's "miserable" is not metaphor, it is a reused paper on the back, where, with the awkwardness that the photo shows, cameras are prohibited inside the venue. Not out of malice or stupidity, it is business sense, because in the snack bar, charge admission also sell several books on the temple. Owners think, with monetary reason that if they stop shooting inside someone will bite and buy in her small bookstore.
.
to whom it may concern: If a National Monument, protected by the laws of the state and subsidized by our taxes, how is it that allows you to their management of private and restrictive? Why are aware that a national cultural asset is treated as a business? How do admit that, year after year, growing obstacles to approach the temple gates, walls, doors? Put
quick remedy to this mess, combining the interests of owners with those of taxpayers, pagans and sufferers suffered the arrogance of the owners "of invention." Failure to do so, go to pillory and stocks, possibly to a pillory "of private property, where you need top pay to be shackled in stocks.
